A Civil Approach to "Campus Carry" and other Gun Regulations

April 14, 2016 by Deborah Trent

This essay by doctoral student Simone Gubler weaves a strong argument for reflective deliberating and other careful classroom practices, as a "campus carry" law goes into effect in Texas. Her argument is a pragmatic civil strategy, dealing with fear through situational awareness as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis. It recognizes that co-existence, not to mention enduring peace, are near-to-impossible. Teachers making their classrooms as safe as they can through empathic discourse, police from within a community engaging within it, legislators considering regulatory changes through an agressively inclusive rule-making process.  Listen, learn, and be safe, wherever you are.
